(Macao, March 5, 2013) – A total of 13 hotels are now participating in the initiative to extend Earth Hour to every month of the year, with seven additional hotels joining Conrad Macao, Cotai Central; Sheraton Macao Hotel, Cotai Central; Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central; The Venetian® Macao; Four Seasons Hotel Macao and Sands® Macao Hotel in switching off their exterior facade and non-essential indoor lighting for one hour Tuesday night, beginning at 8:30 pm. The lights will be off again on Saturday, March 23, for the annual Earth Hour worldwide event.
“We are glad to see major corporations taking the lead in saving energy in Macao, and are pleased that Sands China has taken the initiative to raise the bar for sustainable operations with this important effort to make Earth Hour a monthly exercise in conservation,” said Arnaldo Santos, Director of the Macao SAR Government Office for the Development of the Energy Sector (GDSE).
“Sands® Cotai Central’s Conrad Macao posed a friendly challenge for 10 hotels to join its monthly lights-out,” said Mark McWhinnie, Senior Vice President of Operations of The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel and Sands Cotai Central. “It’s very encouraging to see more hotels joining forces in this impactful green initiative. Its challenge met, Conrad Macao will start going dark twice a month. It’s very good news for environmental sustainability in Macao to have the positive impact of Earth Hour extended throughout the entire year.”
Internationally, Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands and South Africa’s Cape Grace hotel will soon take on the monthly commitment as well, after participating in the worldwide Earth Hour on March 23. Earth Hour is an annual global event each March that encourages households and businesses to turn off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness on climate change. Conrad Macao’s offer to increase its lights-off time to twice a month is part of Earth Hour's global ’I Will If You Will’ campaign.Find out more at www.facebook.com/EarthHourEveryMonth and www.twitter.com/EarthHour12Mths.
