(Macao, March 11, 2013) – Sands China Ltd., in collaboration with the Macau Ecological Society, organised a visit to the Cotai Ecological Protection Zone Saturday morning, where a group of Sands China Care Ambassadors (SCCA) and Green Action Team members were given an exclusive opportunity to observe different species of birds and witness the vast beauty of nature, enhancing their knowledge of the endangered fauna and flora in Macao. The activity was held to support the ongoing environmental sustainability efforts of Sands ECO360°, the global green initiative of Sands China’s parent company, Las Vegas Sands Corp.
Thanks to the support of the Environmental Protection Bureau and the assistance of the Macau Ecological Society, Sands China’s team members visited the Ecological Zone 1, situated adjacent to the Lotus Flower Bridge. The visit was guided by a professional docent from the Environmental Protection Bureau, who educated the SCCA and Green Action Team members about the wetland, which is home to a wide range of plants and animal life, some in danger of extinction. Saturday’s visit together with the birdwatching activity succeeded in enhancing the employees’ understanding of the distinct ecosystem and awareness of environmental conservation, thus contributing to the implementation of Sands ECO360° at Sands China properties.
“I had a great time visiting the wetland today, and all the rare plants and animal life that I saw there really amazed me,” said one of the participating Sands China team members. “I’m thrilled I was able to visit the protection zone and feel the freshness of untouched beauty first-hand. It was truly an inspiring and educational experience that has greatly strengthened my view on the importance of environmental preservation.
”The Cotai Ecological Protection Zone is comprised of two separate zones, occupying a total area of around 55 hectares. Four bird observatories, and marshes, reeds and woods can be found in Zone 1, while four small artificial islands and four species of mangrove plants can be seen in Zone 2. The whole protection zone is home to a large variety of plants, fish, molluscs, insects and crustaceans, as well as resident and migratory birds, including the endangered Black-faced Spoonbill.
In its ongoing effort to promote environmental sustainability through the Sands ECO360° programme, another recent initiative of Sands China is the extension of its participation in Earth Hour beyond just March to every month of this year. In addition to the six hotels situated at Sands China’s Cotai and Macao properties, seven local hotels recently joined the monthly green initiative to switch off their exterior facade and non-essential indoor lighting for one hour on the first Tuesday of every month in 2013. Conrad Macao, Cotai Central will start going dark twice a month, a commitment the luxury hotel pledged to fulfil if 10 other Macao hotels agreed to join the monthly lights-out.
